CS102 Report: The Future of Tape: Not-so-bright

Tapes, like landline phones, are soon to be extinct

•While the magnetic tape WAS one of the widely used secondary storage devices, it is now being replaced by it’s better brothers: magnetic disks and solid state storage devices.

•Magnetic tapes and their relatively fragile nature is one of the reasons why this kind of storage format is likely to be seen at the museums and not on computer rooms.

•More reasons are as follows…

Hard disks are now cheap as dirt

•One of the advantages of magnetic tapes over magnetic tapes is that they are cheaper than magnetic disks.

•Nowadays, magnetic disks are now more cheaper and more capacious than that of a magnetic tape.

Solid state storage devices will totally kill this tape thingy

•While still expensive compared to both magnetic disks and magnetic tapes, this new breed of storage devices are light-years faster than the former, and most of all, can survive on extreme environments where these disks and tapes are likely to die.

•SSDs (Solid State Drives) have no moving parts which means longer life expectancy and less power consumption.

•The prices of SSDs are falling at a fast rate, soon, it will be as cheap as disks and tapes.

Tape’s new life on the archives is just short-lived *

•Magnetic tapes today are used for storing archives

•It is said to be a better medium than that of a disk since those disks are likely to fail in a few years, or not?

•As soon as SSDs are cheap enough, it will replace tapes because of the overall better life span.

Wrap up

•Magnetic Tapes may have changed and kick started the digital revolution on storing information back in the 70’s, but now, with the birth of these new breed of storage devices which are available today, magnetic tapes are likely to be replaced by these things and eventually the tape will finally rest in peace.

•Well, that’s unless someone magically reinvents the tape.
